J EagleSpirit La Vallee says
The term “eskimo” is derogatory and should not be used. In Canada there was a football term called the Edmonton “eskimos”…
Myself, along with many other tribal people and non-indigenous people have argued… to end the use of this offensive word.
Although the name “Eskimo” was commonly used in Alaska to refer to Inuit and Yupik people of the world, this usage is now considered unacceptable by many or even most Alaska Natives, largely since it is a colonial name imposed by non-Indigenous people.
It is true, that some people don’t care or aren’t bothered or they accept “colonial slang” names… butt, if one person is harassed by the term – then let’s end it use.
Sincerely,
Jaye EagleSpirit La Vallee
